Our Curriculum Intent for Langton Primary School

At Langton, we believe in Education for Life. We see our children thrive in our caring small village school set in a beautiful location on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds.

Our aim is to ensure our children have aspirations and are well prepared for the future – to move into adult life with confidence in order to be part of the national and global community. Likewise, we make the most of our local environment and encourage parental and community engagement. Through this, we nurture their personal characteristics such as strength, resilience and enthusiasm for learning. We teach an engaging topic-based curriculum which provides opportunities for ALL our children to experience the world beyond the classroom – to share life experiences and gain an understanding of cultural diversity in an ever-changing world.

Intent of the History Curriculum

  • An excellent knowledge and understanding of people, events and contexts from a range of historical periods and of historical concepts
  • A passion for history and an enthusiastic engagement in learning, which develops curiosity, the ability to think, debate, reflect, discuss, question and evaluate the past
  • The ability to think critically about history and confidently share and explain ideas
  • A respect for historical evidence and an ability to use it to support and explain ideas and judgements when reflecting on the past. Using primary and secondary resources, materials and artefacts
  • Deepen knowledge and understanding through visits, workshops and experiences
  • Develop cross curricular links and connect with the local and wider community to extend knowledge of local history and the immediate environment
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the world and locality we live in today and how history has helped to shape that.

Implementation of the History Curriculum

  • Our long-term plan is based from the Cornerstones curriculum themes and units and we have created a long-term plan (two yearly cycle) that enables us to cover all National Curriculum objectives
  • Planning is differentiated by class groupings (2-year groups) with the possibility of differentiating further for specific year group targets
  • Strong and definite links are made between English, maths and the theme of the topic
  • Specific language and vocabulary is taught through knowledge organisers and communication, speech and language opportunities are fully exploited
  • Teachers and support staff have a sound subject knowledge of the curriculum and topics being taught
  • Educational trips, visits, workshops are planned and arranged to engage and further the children’s’ learning, skills and enthusiasm for history
  • Locally based resources, sites and artefacts are exploited and used readily and frequently

Impact of the History Curriculum

  • All children (including SEND) are engaged and motivated to learn, to develop further skills, knowledge and understanding allowing them to make good or better progress
  • Develop a love of writing for a purpose and an interest in reading for different styles and genres
  • All pupils from E.Y.F.S to Year 6 have an increased knowledge of the world and particular country and locality that they live in
  • Ensure cross curricula links are made to develop children’s’ vocabulary and knowledge
