Ouse Class Curriculum Letter – January 2021

Dear Parents,

I hope you and your families were able to enjoy a safe and happy Christmas, even if it was a quiet one. Although we have got off to a challenging and ever-changing start, I hope after the current lockdown, we can all look forward to a brighter and safer 2021. I am disappointed that I cannot welcome all of the children back into school, but I look forward to seeing how they adapt and respond to their remote-learning. I would like to reassure you that the work sent home remotely via the daily PowerPoint mirrors the work that will be covered in school with the children who are in.

You will now be familiar with the daily overview of lessons being sent out, which covers English, Maths and a topic each day. The topic lessons will cover the wider curriculum and include Science (set by Mrs Huntriss), Computing, French and lessons linked to our Cornerstones curriculum topic.

That topic for this half-term is called ‘Playlist’ and has a Music theme which will see us research genres of music, learn about instruments, and explore how music is used in everyday life. Links will also be made to the Science topic of ‘Sound’, Geography, History, Art, DT and languages.

Each week we will have a grammar lesson covering the topic of ‘Pronouns’ before moving on to ‘Fronted Adverbials’. Along with this we will have lessons linked to our Playlist topic. We will explore the poem ‘The Sound Collector’, looking at onomatopoeia, collecting our own sounds and writing our own poem in a similar style. We will write lyrics and information leaflets too, using Purple Mash to support our remote learning.

Our first Maths area of learning will be ‘Multiplication and Division,’ and the children will learn how to use formal written methods to calculate answers. I ask that throughout this term, children continue to practise their times tables, as a sound understanding of these will build the foundation for our work on written methods. (TT rockstars is a good resource to help support this!) We will then move on to our ‘Measurement’ unit, where we compare and convert units of measurement and learn how to calculate perimeter and area. We will also spend some time adding and subtracting amounts of money and converting between pounds and pence.

If you have any questions about the lessons set this half term, please do get in touch via the class email account: ouseclass@langton.n-yorks.sch.uk

Kind regards

Miss Boyle
