Meet Mrs Cummings

My name is Kathryn Cummings but I tend to be called Mrs. C. I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone at Langton Primary school really well. I live in York and love being outside in the countryside with my dog, I also enjoy cricket, James Bond films and reading books.

Meet Mr Walker

I am delighted to have joined the team here at Langton and I am really enjoying my new role at the school. I have been teaching now for many years and I have previously taught across all ages in Key Stage Two with the majority of my experience being in Year 6. I have come from a much larger outstanding primary school where my responsibilities were behaviour and safeguarding. At Langton as well as being Class 3 teacher it is my role to lead Maths and PE.

I live in a small village on the outskirts of York with my wife and two young children. My personal life revolves around my family and I really look forward to the time we spend together. We go on camping holidays and days out whenever possible and I also have a keen interest in sport, cinema and music. I really enjoy participating in most sports although I seem to spend more time cheering for my children than playing myself now!

Rye Class This Term

Dear Parents,

These are strange and unprecedented times but it has been fantastic having all the children back this week. They seem to have really enjoyed being back in school and have come full of enthusiasm, ready to begin the new school year. Outlined below is a summary of the areas of learning that Rye Class will be covering this term.

Our topic for this half term is ‘Pharaohs’. This half term, we’ll be travelling back in time 5000 years to ancient Egypt. We are going to learn about the gruesome but fascinating process of mummification. We’ll write a report about Howard Carter’s famous discovery and use different sources to research Tutankhamun’s tomb. We’ll also consider whether it was right to open Tutankhamun’s tomb or whether perhaps, it should have been left as it was. We’ll draw Egyptian artefacts in detail and study historical sources to learn more about the Pharaohs, the Egyptian gods and ancient religious beliefs.

In Literacy, we will be reading and writing traditional stories, fables, myths and legends. There will also be a focus on grammar based activities in class and I will be sending home a glossary of the terms, that the children should start to become familiar with (if they aren’t already) and a list of Year 5/6 spellings.

In Maths, the children will hopefully be increasing their understanding of number and place value as it is vital that these skills are embedded so further learning can build upon this knowledge.  We will also be trying to improve the children’s calculation skills and showing them how they can use the four operations to answer increasingly difficult reasoning problems. We will finish the term off learning about prime numbers before moving on to statistics. It would be really helpful if the children are secure with their times tables up to 12 x 12 and they can use TT Rockstars to help them with this at home. All children also have access to Mathletics at home where I will set them activities relating to our topics, to help them develop and revise their knowledge.
